25 Things - Mom was first
9. My mother was the first woman to be featured on the cover of an oil industry magazine. It's pretty unusual for women to work in the oil fields or on rigs today, but even more so in the 1970's. That's my mom, always doing her own thing. Sadly, we don't have a copy of the magazine.
She started in Wyoming, first as an EMT (don't even think about all the accidents) and then as an x-ray technician. As I understand it, there are pipelines that take oil from the source to a refinery, and those pipes have to be periodically inspected and x-rayed for any imperfections. The film must be developed and inspected, and that's where the x-ray technician comes in. Later on she went to work in the Gulf of Mexico on an offshore rig, coming home at night to our home in New Orleans. Eventually she moved on to other things, but it's cool to think of how she broke down a bit of the status quo.
Happy birthday, Mom!

She was? I didn't know that! You are going to have to tell me this story.
