Express Yourself

A little more than a year ago I was introduced to 70's song I'd never heard before, by Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.  I loved it the moment I heard it...casual, silly, and funky all at the same time.  Kind of like me, some would say.

Rodgers Townsend, a hotshot ad agency in downtown St. Louis, had used it in the electronic invitation to their annual shindig and thought it would be cool to have the song played at the party.  Since they're silly enough not to employ a bass player and thus can't recruit that person to play in their "house band", I'm their ringer.  Funny, I think I'm the only one who actually likes playing this song!

This Thursday is the 2008 annual shindig, and guess what's on the set list - yup, that's right:
"Express Yourself"

In case you're wondering "just how many people play in this group?", there are two keyboards, two (sometimes three) guitars, one bass, one drums, two horns, three to five singers.  Sometimes we throw in some additional percussion.  As you might imagine, it's fun trying to get consensus in a group of that size!
